Early Life and Education

Jurij Zrnec was born on November 20, 1952, in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He studied at the University of Ljubljana, where he earned a degree in philosophy in 1975. He then continued his studies at the University of Zagreb, where he received a doctorate in philosophy in 1981.

Career

Zrnec began his career as a journalist in 1976, working for the Slovenian newspaper Delo. He later became a professor at the University of Ljubljana, where he taught courses in philosophy and political science. In 1992, he was appointed Minister of Culture of Slovenia, a position he held until 1994.

Zrnec also served as the president of the Slovenian Writers' Association from 1996 to 1998. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004, and he served as the president of the Slovenian PEN Centre from 2005 to 2011.

Zrnec was a prolific writer, and he published over 30 books. His work includes novels, short stories, essays, and plays. His work has been translated into over 20 languages, and he has received numerous awards for his writing, including the Prešeren Award, Slovenia's highest cultural honor.
