Clarion Ledger Documents Reveal Details

Mississippi State to Pay Half of Arnett's Buyout

Clarion-Ledger Documents Reveal Details

$4.5 Million Remaining on Former Coach's Salary

According to documents obtained by The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi State University will be responsible for paying half of former coach Joe Moorhead's remaining $9 million salary. The buyout, which totals $4.5 million, will be paid over three years.

Moorhead was fired in November 2019 after three seasons as head coach. He was replaced by Zach Arnett, who was previously the team's defensive coordinator.

MSU may not be on the hook for the entire $4.5 million, as Moorhead could potentially get another coaching job and offset the buyout amount. However, the university is still obligated to pay the full amount if Moorhead does not find another job.

The buyout is a significant financial burden for Mississippi State, which is already facing budget challenges. The university's athletic department has a history of financial problems, and the buyout will only add to the pressure.

The buyout underscores the high cost of coaching turnover in college football. Mississippi State is now on its third head coach in four years, and the university has spent a significant amount of money on buyouts during that time.
